Dinner Last Night

Yesterday my path to the kitchen for dinner included a gardening pitstop to prep a garden bed for the spring planting, grabbing a few AZ Sweet oranges for breakfast juice, picking up the eggs from the chicken run for breakfst tomorrow morning and the sweet spot...fresh asparagus for dinner to go along with my TV pot pie dinner. LOL I know it is quite the contrast.

Gianna Walker:

What are some things to know about growing asparagus in phoenix?

where did you buy them?

and do they come back year after year?

The best way to go about planting and growing asparagus is to:

Did trench 12 inches deep - removing all the soil. Use some of the soil from the trench and mix in an equal amount of organic material or mulch. Place the asparagus roots in the bottom of the trench and cover then with the soil/mulch mixture. Only fill the trench half way and let the asparagus grow for a year, not harvesting any the first year.

Then the second year fill the trench the rest of the way. In fact we added 24 inches of sheet mulch over the top of the asparagus this last year. Watch for my next post on sheet mulching.

In the past I have seen them at Baker nursery in Phoenix or you can order them online.

Asparagus is a perennial and I have been told that when it is grown organically the best producing years are after it has been in the ground for more than 5 years.

The asparagus sounds yummy! How difficult is it to grown in Phoenix?
