Carniverous Plants!
Because I just moved, my house plants are in a slight state of shock. The move was rather traumatic--a very bumpy dirt road made my aloe VERY upset! Anyhow, I, too, have contributed to the degradation of my plant's health...my jade plant had poor drainage as it sat on a chinese saucer in our living room. The poor drainage led to a gnat problem. For the longest time I couldn't figure out where they were coming from, but it appears that they had set-up house in the bottom drainage hole of my pot, up in the dirt.
Now this brings up two points. First of all, don't neglect your plants and be sure they have proper drainage. (Had I done that, I would have alleviated all the issues that were to follow). But, if you are like me and your plant had improper drainage and you are faced with a gnat problem.....might I recommend carniverous plants ?
I've always been intrigued with venus fly traps and as I researched them, I learned about other native north american carniverous plants such as the Sundew and the Cala Lily. Anyhow, I had a terrarium laying around (yes, random thing to have laying around, but it comes in handy and is very cute). The terrarium is only 1'x1'x.5' so it is tiny. Anyhow, I put some peat and spanghum moss in it, planted my venus fly trap, lily and sundew and I let the humidity rise in the terrarium for a day and then opened the latch and Wa-laa! Gnat problem beginning to be eliminated the natural way! The plants have started to eat the gnats and I have repotted the jade with better drainage and problem solved!
Plus, the plants are soo cool! I mean really....a carniverous plant! Wow. Anyhow, give it a shot!
