Global Mala Project

This weekend, Sept. 21-23 in conjunction with the fall equinox, more than 35 countries, hundreds of yoga studios and thousands of yoga practitioners will gather together as a part of the Global Mala Project, brain child of Shiva Rae, L.A. based yoga teacher.

The purpose of the Global Mala is to unite the global yoga community from every continent, school or approach to form a "mala around the earth" through collective practices based upon the sacred cycle of 108 as the yoga world's offering to further the UN International Peace Day. Each center offers their form of a Yoga Mala according to their yoga tradition and inspiration.

Rockin' Yoga Evening to benefit Darfur

Date: July 28, 2007 (Saturday)
Time: 7:00 - 8:00 pm Yoga Class; 8:00 - 9:00 pm FUN!
Location: Scottsdale
www.atoneyoga.com

Teacher: Ian Lopatin

Cost: $50 donation for KoZon Foundation

Ian will be teaching the class and John will be spinning the tunes. To be followed by food & fun!

Proceeds will go to "KoZon." KoZon is an acronym, indicating "Cooking with Solar Energy."

KoZon's aim is to provide women in developing countries with the cheapest technique for cooking with solar energy. The focus is on countries in the Sahelian zone of West Africa. The target group is women who cook meals daily on a wood or charcoal fire.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations estimates that about three billion people - that's half the world's population - currently cook their daily meals on a wood or charcoal fire. In a West African country such as Burkina Faso, this is the case for 90% of the population.

The increasing consumption of wood is making this commodity scarcer, especially in arid and semi arid regions such as the Sahelian zone of Africa. Here, because people have to go further afield to find suitable firewood, or have to pay high prices for it, children are increasingly being mobilized to collect this essential commodity. This leads to increasing poverty, less education for children, potentially adverse effects on health, and damage to nature and the environment in the form of deforestation and desertification. One way to combat the negative effects at household level is to use solar energy for cooking, thus reducing the dependence on expensive wood fuel.

Mother Teresa said "We belong to one another" and Gandhi said " My religion is kindness"

I was reading yesterday's paper and on the front page of Arizona Living was an article entitled - Music For Mother Earth - World wide concerts rally fans to fight climate change.

Artists and celebrities are coming together to donate their talents in a more meaningful way to create a shift in how we view our world.

Music and thoughts are vibrations. This global event will serve to raise collective conciousness and unite us all in a deeper way to our committment to as Gandhi said, Being the change we wish to see in the world.

Live Earth was created by Al Gore and promotor Kevin Wall as a way for us to come together to fight against global warming. Over 100 countries will have televised access to these concerts. You can also check it out at liveearth.msn.com or tune in tonight as NBC airs a 3 hour special on highlights from the shows.

Find out how you can make a difference. Together we can!

“... and the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud
was more painful than the risk to bloom.”
                                                               - Anais Nin

This spring has been an amazing joy of natural discovery, nature’s promise of rebirth and renewal. I live in an enchanted neighborhood on the fringe of Arcadia where feral fowl abound. There are guinea hens, peacocks, roosters and hens. Yes, many, many hens and in spring that means baby chicks. On any given day there may be up to 24 little ones roaming my yard like it’s the vast countryside. A backyard wall of oleanders serve as nesting grounds for the hens to lay their eggs and becomes magical by night as pink and white blooms twinkle in the moonlight.

I have a small potted Hibiscus on my front porch that hasn’t bloomed since last year. The other day I caught a flash of orange as I was getting out of my car, and being in a hurry, almost dismissed it. Curiosity took over and I paused to investigate and what I saw took my breath away. The most vibrant tangerine petals housing a deep maroon center like a beating heart, outlined in carnation pink, crowned by a sunlit yellow stamen and fairy dusted tips of red. Time stood still and in a single bloom I saw deeply into the universe and all was right with the world. A quote comes to mind:
“Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but by the moments that take our breath away.”

I didn’t know it at the time, but the hibiscus blooms for one day only. This exquisite beauty is a reminder of life’s impermanence and preciousness.

Take time this summer to enjoy what really matters to you, spending time with those you love and noticing the grace and wonder of what is right in front of you. You never know what you might find in your own front yard!

If you are looking to venture out a little further, I’d love to have you join me in Costa Rica this August 4-11. What could be more refreshing than a cool misty 75 degrees instead of a sweltering 110+ degrees. Along with daily yoga practices, which will include pranayama and meditation, three fresh organic meals a day and transportation to and from the airport we’ll journey on three eco tours.

• A Canopy Adventure where hitched into a harness we’ll fly from tree platform to tree platform on the flanks of Barva Volcano.
• Visit Waterfall Gardens, a beautiful hike along the La Paz River where a series of five waterfalls cascade though the cloud forest. Included in this tour is the largest butterfly enclosure in the world as well as a hummingbird garden where more than a dozen species fly and flitter within arms reach.
• Poas Volcano - Walk through the cloud forest at the top of this semi active volcano where you can peer into the crater itself with its iridescent blue water and fumaroles.
Now is the time to register and purchase airline tickets for the best deals. Click here for more details on the trip including accommodations and how to join us

May all your summer travels near and far bring you delight!

From love and in light,
Mary
